The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB) has received a delegation from TaRL Africa on a monitoring and assessment visit aimed at evaluating the implementation of the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) programme across participating schools in Kaduna State.
The visit focused on assessing the programme’s implementation in public basic schools, including Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), as part of efforts to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy among learners.
Speaking during the meeting, the Board Secretary of KADSUBEB, Hassan Othman, who represented the Executive Chairman, Mubarak Mohammed, expressed appreciation to TaRL Africa for its continued partnership and support in improving foundational learning outcomes across the state.
He noted that the introduction of the TaRL methodology has significantly transformed classroom teaching and learning in public schools by making lessons more interactive and engaging for pupils.
According to him, the programme has enhanced pupils’ participation, confidence, and interest in learning, contributing to improved educational outcomes in schools where it has been implemented.
“The TaRL approach has brought positive changes to our classrooms, making learning more enjoyable and helping pupils develop stronger foundational skills,” he said.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of Donor-Funded Projects, Josephine R. Michael, welcomed the delegation and commended TaRL Africa for its sustained collaboration with Kaduna State in strengthening the basic education sector.
She reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the successful implementation and expansion of the programme in line with government efforts to improve learning outcomes at the foundational level.
Mrs. Michael disclosed that the TaRL programme has so far been implemented in approximately 43 per cent of Kaduna State’s local government areas. She explained that the initiative is currently operational in nine LGAs, with plans underway to extend its implementation to an additional local government area in the near future.
The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to engage with education stakeholders, review the programme’s progress, and assess its impact and challenges as part of ongoing efforts to enhance literacy and numeracy skills among schoolchildren in Kaduna State.
The Teaching at the Right Level programme is designed to improve foundational learning by grouping pupils according to their learning needs rather than age or grade level, enabling targeted instruction that helps learners acquire essential literacy and numeracy skills.
Stakeholders at the meeting expressed optimism that the continued partnership between KADSUBEB and TaRL Africa would further strengthen basic education delivery and contribute to improved learning outcomes across Kaduna State.
