The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has validated a comprehensive private sector engagement framework aimed at mobilising corporate and philanthropic support for the enrolment of vulnerable populations into the state’s contributory healthcare scheme.
The framework was endorsed during a high-level validation and approval meeting held at the office of the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, in collaboration with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). The meeting reviewed and approved a suite of advocacy and stakeholder engagement documents designed to strengthen private sector participation in financing healthcare coverage for vulnerable residents across Kano State.
The session, chaired by the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, focused on the review of key implementation documents, including the Concept Note, Expression of Interest (EOI) Form, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Template, and stakeholder engagement presentation materials that will guide the initiative.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Muktar reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to exploring innovative and sustainable financing mechanisms to accelerate progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and ensure that vulnerable citizens can access quality healthcare services without experiencing financial hardship.
She noted that despite ongoing government investments in the health sector, strategic partnerships with the private sector remain critical to addressing healthcare financing gaps, expanding health insurance coverage, and strengthening social health protection across the state.
According to her, the engagement framework will provide structured opportunities for corporate organisations, development partners, foundations, and philanthropists to contribute towards the enrolment and retention of vulnerable individuals under the KSCHMA Vulnerable Population Programme (VPP).
The validation exercise also enabled participants to conduct a detailed review of the proposed engagement framework, partnership modalities, institutional responsibilities, and implementation roadmap ahead of broader consultations with private sector organisations and other stakeholders.
As part of the resolutions reached at the meeting, KSCHMA approved the next phase of stakeholder engagement activities and agreed on coordination and implementation mechanisms, including the appointment of a focal person to oversee collaboration between the agency and participating partners.
The VPP Private Sector Engagement Initiative forms part of KSCHMA’s broader strategy to strengthen social health protection, enhance financial risk protection for vulnerable groups, and support the healthcare transformation agenda of the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The agency expressed optimism that the initiative would contribute significantly to improving access to healthcare services for underserved populations while advancing the state’s goal of achieving universal health coverage.
