Sanwo-Olu Says Institutions Must Outlive Political Office Holders

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, says the enduring legacy of his administration will be measured not only by infrastructure delivered across the state but also by the institutions strengthened and systems established to sustain good governance beyond his tenure.

Sanwo-Olu stated this in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, at the church thanksgiving service marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 Legal Year at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos.

As his administration enters the final phase of its tenure, the Governor said attention must extend beyond completed projects to the institutions and systems that would continue to serve Lagos residents in the future.

He said public institutions should outlive the individuals occupying public offices, adding that a lasting legacy should encompass strong institutions, citizens’ confidence and systems designed to benefit future generations.

Sanwo-Olu said the success of his administration should therefore not be judged solely by roads, infrastructure and other physical projects, but also by the strength of institutions supported and the systems put in place for the Lagos of tomorrow.

The Governor placed the judiciary at the centre of this institutional legacy, noting that a thriving society requires an effective justice system where citizens’ rights are protected, disputes are fairly resolved, contracts are respected and everyone can seek justice irrespective of status.

He said this was particularly important for Lagos because of its large population, vibrant economy and complex social environment, stressing that public confidence in the justice system has implications for businesses, investment, economic activity and trust in government.

Sanwo-Olu assured the judiciary that the Lagos State Government would continue, within its constitutional responsibilities, to support initiatives aimed at improving access to justice, strengthening the administration of justice and making the system more responsive to citizens’ needs.

He, however, said the sustainability of any institutional legacy ultimately depended on the values and integrity of those entrusted with its stewardship.

“It rests on integrity. It rests on courage. It rests on fairness. And it rests on the willingness to do what is right, even when it is difficult,” the Governor said.

He urged members of the judiciary and the legal profession to safeguard the integrity of the justice system, noting that political administrations and public office holders would change, while institutions of justice must remain strong and trusted.

The Governor also called on stakeholders to use the new Legal Year to renew their commitment to judicial independence, fairness, accountability, dignity and respect for the rule of law.

He urged judges to continue dispensing justice without fear or favour, while lawyers were advised to uphold the ethics and dignity of the profession and remain committed to the service of justice.

Sanwo-Olu reminded public servants that public offices are temporary, while the institutions they are entrusted to serve belong to the people.

He congratulated members of the Lagos legal community on the commencement of the 2026/2027 Legal Year and prayed for wisdom and courage for judges, strength for the legal profession and continued guidance for the state’s institutions.

Judges and magistrates, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, members of the Bar and other distinguished guests attended the service.
