In a bold step toward modernizing journalism in Africa, Media Rights Agenda MRA has officially launched a comprehensive guide titled “Leveraging Digital Tools for Journalism Practice,” a vital resource designed to help journalists thrive in an increasingly digital media landscape.

Authored by Ayomide Eweje, MRA’s Programme Officer, the 164-page guide explores an extensive suite of digital tools and technologies that journalists can deploy to enhance their work—from story sourcing and fact-checking to multimedia storytelling and digital security.

“The publication is a necessary response to the realities of journalism in a rapidly evolving digital age,” Eweje said.

“It provides practical, hands-on guidance on using tools for news gathering, audience engagement, cybersecurity, and countering disinformation, among others.”

Eweje emphasized that the guide is not just about adopting new tools, but also about empowering media professionals to lead innovation, protect their sources, and uphold journalistic integrity.

She noted the exponential evolution of media tools over the past two decades, highlighting that while technology has enabled journalists to tell deeper, more engaging stories and connect with audiences globally, it has also introduced complex challenges such as surveillance, cyber threats, and misinformation.

“As journalism evolves, so must the knowledge, skills, and mindsets of those who practice it,” she added, calling on journalists to actively embrace digital capacity-building and urging media organizations to invest in digital literacy and technology access.

In the Preface, MRA’s Executive Director, Edetaen Ojo, reiterated the dual nature of the digital era for journalism—offering transformative opportunities alongside threats like hacking, deepfakes, censorship, and online harassment.

Ojo stressed the urgent need for journalists to be equipped with tools to counter digital threats while reaching new audiences through innovative methods.

MRA plans to distribute the guide to newsrooms, journalism schools, and media development organizations across Nigeria and Africa, and it will also be available for free download via the organization’s official website.
