The 2026 edition of the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival has commenced in Kebbi State with a series of activities, including an Investors’ Summit, secondary schools quiz competition, races, and colourful cultural and traditional displays.
Declaring the afternoon events open, the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Muhammad Usman Zuru, described the festival’s return as historic and memorable.
He said the Kebbi State Government under Governor Nasir Idris deserves commendation for reviving the festival after it was suspended for more than five years.
According to the Speaker, the Argungu Emirate Council, as custodian of the rich cultural heritage, played a pivotal role in ensuring the successful hosting of the festival.
He particularly acknowledged the leadership of the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, for his steadfast commitment throughout the preparations.
The afternoon lineup featured camel race, donkey race, horse race, archery, catapulting and an international polo tournament.
He added that car, bicycle and motorcycle races were earlier flagged off in Abuja as part of the festival’s activities.
Usman Zuru noted that participants were drawn from within and outside Nigeria, underscoring the festival’s international appeal.
He stated that winners in various competitions would receive trophies and prizes ranging from first to third positions, in cash or kind.
The 2026 edition is being celebrated as a symbol of unity and a successful revival of the globally renowned cultural event.
The festival attracted high-level attendance, including government officials, traditional rulers, well-wishers and visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.
The Argungu Festival, known for its vibrant cultural showcases and hospitality, brought together Nigerians from diverse ethnic, cultural, religious and political backgrounds, united in celebration and admiration of the rich artistic heritage embedded in the historic event.
