The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusion, protection, and equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their background or circumstances, as it commemorated the 2026 International Children’s day.
In his remarks the Kano Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo said the theme, “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child,” highlightsxthe urgent need to invest in children to secure the nation’s future.
He emphasized that every child, irrespective of gender, disability, socio-economic status, ethnicity, religion, or geographical location, deserves access to quality education, healthcare, protection, and opportunities for personal development.
“The future of our nation is being shaped today through the opportunities, protection, education, and care we provide for our children. Inclusion is not merely a policy objective; it is a fundamental right and a moral responsibility,”
The deputy governor noted that the administration remains committed to implementing policies and programmes aimed at ensuring that no child is left behind. He highlighted ongoing investments in education, healthcare, and child protection systems, particularly for vulnerable groups, including children with disabilities and out-of-school children.
He also urged children across the state to pursue their dreams with determination while embracing values such as honesty, respect, and patriotism.
In her address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and People with Special Needs, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani, described the celebration as more than a ceremonial event, saying it reflects Kano State’s commitment to ensuring that every child matters and is included in development efforts.
According to her, the state government has translated its commitment to inclusion into tangible actions through the construction and renovation of schools in underserved communities, recruitment of teachers, and expansion of educational opportunities for children in rural areas.
She also highlighted the creation of a Department for Persons with Special needs within the ministry, aimed at improving the socio-economic well-being of people living with disabilities, especially children.
The commissioner further revealed that the government has approved the construction of a State Diversion Centre for children in conflict with the law. The facility, currently under construction, will focus on rehabilitation through skills acquisition, counselling, education, and recreational activities rather than punishment.
“This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to rehabilitation, reformation, and correction while ensuring that children’s education is not disrupted,” she said.
Amina also noted that the administration has strengthened social protection programmes through increased enrolment of vulnerable children and persons with disabilities in the state’s contributory healthcare scheme.
She commended Governor Yusuf for improving welfare services in orphanages across the state, including the construction of a modern hostel at the Nassarawa Children’s Home and the empowerment of 85 young adults from orphanages with N200,000 each to support business ventures. Qualified beneficiaries were also offered employment opportunities in the state civil service.
Despite the progress recorded, the commissioner appealed for the inauguration of the Kano State Child Protection Committee to facilitate effective implementation of the Child Protection Law. She also called for the enactment of an orphanage bill to strengthen safeguards against child abuse, trafficking, and the operation of illegal orphanages.
Addressing children directly, she encouraged them to remain focused on education, avoid drug abuse and violence, and pursue their aspirations confidently.
“For children with specialneeds, know that Kano State sees you, values you, and will continue to create opportunities for you to thrive. Your talent, your voice, and your future are important,” she said.
The commissioner also urged parents, teachers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to support efforts aimed at creating safe homes, inclusive schools, and protective environments for every child.
The event brought together government officials, development partners, civil society organisations, traditional leaders, and children from across the state to celebrate the rights, welfare, and future of Nigerian Children.
