The African Union (AU) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Emir of the State of Qatar, describing him as a visionary leader whose legacy transformed his country into a respected global actor.
In a condolence message issued on Saturday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the AU Commission to the Amir of Qatar, the Government and people of the State of Qatar, as well as the bereaved family.
The AU Chairperson said Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani would be remembered for his wisdom, statesmanship and unwavering commitment to dialogue, mediation and diplomacy.
According to the statement, the late Father Emir played a significant role in advancing peaceful solutions to regional and global challenges while championing multilateral cooperation.
The African Union also acknowledged his enduring contribution to Africa, describing him as a valued partner who promoted peace, development and South-South cooperation, while strengthening relations between Qatar and African countries.
The statement further highlighted Qatar’s contributions to global peace and stability through mediation efforts and dialogue among parties in conflict, noting that these reflected the country’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The African Union expressed solidarity with the State of Qatar during the period of mourning and prayed for Almighty Allah to grant the late Father Emir eternal peace and provide comfort to his family and the people of Qatar.
