The Kano State House of Assembly KNHA has urged the state government to, as a matter of urgent public importance, provide immediate relief to victims of the recent rainstorm in Bichi Local Government Area, where eight people lost their lives and several houses and properties were destroyed.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the member representing Bichi Constituency, Lawan Shehu, during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore.
Presenting the motion, Lawan Shehu said the rainstorm, which occurred last Thursday, claimed eight lives and destroyed homes and properties worth millions of naira across affected communities in Bichi.
He said he, alongside the Chairman of Bichi Local Government, visited the affected communities to sympathise with the victims. According to him, the member representing Bichi Federal Constituency provided ₦2 million to each bereaved family, while victims who lost both relatives and property received ₦10 million in assistance.
The lawmaker appealed to the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to provide emergency relief materials and other support to the affected residents.
After carefuly deliberations, the House unanimously adopted the motion and called on the state government to expedite action in providing the necessary assistance to the victims.
In another development, the Assembly adopted a motion urging the state government to establish two modern skills acquisition centres in Tudun Fulani and Zango wards of Ungogo Local Government Area.
The motion, sponsored by the member representing Ungogo Constituency, Saad Aminu, noted that the area has a large youth population in need of vocational and entrepreneurial skills to promote self-reliance.
Saad Aminu said the proposal became more imperative following the recent arrest of over 20 youths suspected of involvement in kidnapping, many of whom reportedly lacked formal education.
He added that the proposed centres would also benefit youths from neighbouring Minjibir, Dala and Fagge local government areas.
The motion was seconded by the Majority Leader and member representing Dala Constituency, Lawan Hussaini.
The House also adopted motions calling for the upgrade and installation of modern facilities at Sabon Bakin Zuwa Hospital in Jakara, Kano Municipal Local Government Area, as well as the rehabilitation of roads in Makoda, Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Local Government Areas.
