The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) has organized a training workshop for women journalists aimed at strengthening ethical journalism, responsible reporting, and adherence to legal and professional standards.
Speaking during the workshop, participants were reminded of the importance of exercising caution in their speech and avoiding defamatory statements.
They reflected on the Qur’anic verses with facilitators emphasizing the theme, “Mind Your Tongue,” as a guiding principle for journalists in their professional responsibilities.
The workshop also highlighted the critical role of women journalists in using the media to promote positive social change, peace, and national unity.
Discussions further examined the underrepresentation of Muslims in Nigeria’s media landscape and stressed the need for balanced and responsible journalism that fosters unity rather than division.
The first day of the workshop, coordinated by Dr. Sa’idu Ahmad Dukawa, featured presentations by prominent scholars and media professionals, including Dr. Sunusi Uguda, Professor Muhammad Babangida Muhammad, Professor Gausu Ahmad, Hajiya Sa’a Ibrahim, former General Manager of ARTV, Professor Aisha Abdullahi Isma’il, and Dr. Bala Muhammad.
In her remarks, the Kano state chairperson NAWOJ Sayyada Bahijja Malam Kabara expressed appreciation for the knowledge and insights gained during the opening day of the training.
She urged members of the Association of Women Journalists to apply the lessons in their daily professional practice and remain committed to ethical, responsible, and development-oriented journalism.
