    KNSG UNICEF Workshop Seeks to Sustain Polio Eradication

    Kano State is taking significant steps to eradicate polio, with local government chairmen and district heads from all 44 local LGAs undergoing a two-day training workshop.

    The workshop, organized by the Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board and supported by UNICEF, aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent the spread of polio.

    The training focuses on sustaining gains in polio eradication, routine immunization, and other primary healthcare services.

    It also addresses immunization, polio eradication, and zero-dose issues affecting the state.

    Kano State Gov’t Reiterates Commitment to Polio Eradication

    Declaring open the workshop, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to eradicating polio and pledged to provide necessary support.

    He maintained that the polio vaccine has been efficient and effective worldwide, and urged political and traditional Leaders to monitor immigrants to verify evidence of immunization.

    According to the Director General of Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr. Nasir Mahmoud, the workshop seeks to secure commitments from LGA chairmen and district heads on funding, monitoring, and coordination of immunization and polio eradication program.

    “To update the LG chairmen district heads and other stakeholders on current health indices, immunization, polio eradication, and zero doses in Kano”

    The chief of field office, UNICEF Kano, Mr. Rahma Rihood Mohammad, emphasized that despite progress, children in Kano are still vulnerable to polio, with nearly 250,000 zero-dose children.

    He urged the state government to intensify efforts through community mobilization, health worker support, and increased resources.

    3.6 Million Children to Receive Polio Vaccination in Kano

    Also speaking the Advocacy Specialist UNICEF Priyanka Khanna, highlighted that, UNICEF will work with the LGA chairmen and District heads to reach every eligible child for immunization.

    “Our expectation from every single participant is that when they go back to Kano they should give their 100 support and encourage parents to present their children for immunization”

    She urged stakeholders to join hands in the polio eradication efforts to achieve the desired objectives.

    Paradigm reports that, the workshop was marked by presentations, speech by the commissioner for health Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, commissioner for local governments Alhaji Muhammad Tajudeen Usman, ES KSCHMA Dr Rahila Mukhtar , National and state EOC coordinators among others.
