The Kano state government has reaffirmed its dedication to eliminating polio in the state. Deputy Governor and Chairman State Taskforce Committee on Immunization, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, emphasized the importance of understanding poliomyelitis as a virus caused by filth, which can spread rapidly and attack people, especially children, if not timely addressed.
Comrade Abdussalam highlighted that scientific research has proven polio to be a virus, not caused by spirits, and assured that observing personal and environmental hygiene is key to preventing the disease.
He also urged people to allow their children to be vaccinated, citing that the polio vaccine has been tested and found safe in many Muslim countries.
The Kano state government aims to achieve total eradication of the disease, as was previously recorded when Nigeria was certified polio-free.
However, the state is currently leading in variant polio virus cases, with 20 out of 60 cases nationwide.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, appreciated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for approving logistics for the successful conduct of the campaign.
Representatives from the World Health Organization, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, and other global health organizations commended the Kano state government’s commitment to eliminating polio and assured continued support to the state’s healthcare system.
