Athletes from across the country have begun arriving in Lagos ahead of the highly anticipated Commonwealth Games Trials scheduled to take place at the Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech) Sports Complex.
The trials, which will serve as a key selection event for Team Nigeria, are expected to bring together some of the nation’s finest track and field athletes as they compete for places in the national team for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.
Early arrivals include contingents from Akwa Ibom and Kwara states, while several elite athletes have also touched down in Lagos, raising expectations for a fiercely contested championship.
The atmosphere within Nigeria’s athletics community is already buzzing with excitement as athletes, coaches, and officials converge on the nation’s commercial capital in preparation for the three-day event.
Top officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) have also arrived in Lagos to oversee preparations. The President of the federation, Chief Tonobok Okowa, alongside members of the AFN Technical Committee, is expected to supervise the trials and ensure the smooth conduct of the competition.
Organisers have intensified preparations for the event, with technical equipment already being moved into Lagos ahead of the commencement of activities.
The National Institute for Sports (NIS) at the National Stadium, Surulere, is currently serving as a transit camp for athletes and officials who arrived early, providing accommodation and logistical support before the official opening of the federation’s camp.
The AFN camp for qualified athletes is scheduled to open on June 19, allowing competitors to complete their final preparations before the start of the trials.
