The Athletics Federation of Nigeria AFN has postponed the commencement of the 2026 Commonwealth Games national trials by one day to accommodate athletes affected by severe weather disruptions in the United States.
The trials, which were initially scheduled for June 20 to June 22 at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Sports Complex in Lagos, will now hold from June 21 to June 23 at the same venue.
The adjustment followed an emergency meeting of the AFN board chaired by its president, Chief Tonobok Okowa, held in Lagos.
According to the federation, the decision became necessary after several Nigerian athletes based in the United States were unable to travel as planned due to widespread flight cancellations triggered by heavy rain, storms, and flash flooding across parts of the U.S., including Atlanta, Montgomery, and Alabama.
Many of the affected athletes reportedly appealed for additional time to enable them arrive in Nigeria and participate in the crucial selection trials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Following deliberations, the AFN said the rescheduling was made in the best interest of all stakeholders, particularly the athletes whose travel plans were disrupted by the extreme weather conditions.
The federation also expressed optimism that the affected athletes remain committed to representing Nigeria and are making efforts to arrive in time for the competition.
It appealed for understanding from athletes already in Lagos, urging them to remain patient as arrangements are made, while wishing their colleagues safe travels.
The national trials are expected to feature some of Nigeria’s top track and field athletes competing for places in Team Nigeria ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
