The Kano State Government says the Federal Government has approved the establishment of additional military bases in security-prone parts of the state to strengthen security operations and curb the growing threat of armed banditry.
The initiative follows growing concerns over the infiltration of armed bandits and rising security threats in parts of the state.
The new military bases are expected to strengthen security operations, enhance rapid response to attacks and improve the protection of lives and property in vulnerable communities.
Areas being considered for the establishment of the bases include Shanono, Bichi, Gwarzo, Doguwa and Tudun Wada, among other communities identified as vulnerable to attacks.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Taju Usman, disclosed this after a meeting held on September 5, 2026, between Governor Yusuf and chairmen of the 44 local government councils, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, the commissioner and the State Accountant-General.
He said the meeting focused on security, infrastructure and human capital development, with participants agreeing on measures to strengthen the state’s security architecture.
According to the commissioner, Governor Yusuf had already met with the Minister of Defence, where both parties agreed on the need to establish additional military bases in local government areas considered vulnerable to security threats.
Usman said the proposed bases would complement existing security structures, including the Nigeria Police Force, Neighbourhood Watch and Forest Guards.
He explained that the initiative would facilitate rapid response to security threats, protect vulnerable communities and safeguard lives and property.
On education and infrastructure, the commissioner disclosed that contracts had been awarded for the establishment and provision of Computer-Based Test and Information and Communication Technology centres in each of the 44 local government areas.
He said the project, valued at N27.8 billion, would commence immediately.
According to him, the centres would provide students with improved access to internet facilities for Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examinations and other computer-based tests.
The commissioner also announced plans by the state government to provide one rural ambulance to every ward across Kano State.
He said the initiative was aimed at improving access to emergency and basic healthcare services, particularly in rural communities.
Usman added that two drivers would be employed for each ambulance, with preference given to qualified residents of the respective wards.
EV Charging Points, Solar Streetlights
The state government, he said, also plans to establish electric vehicle charging points at strategic locations within Kano metropolis as a pilot project.
He explained that the initiative would be expanded depending on the outcome of the pilot programme.
The commissioner further announced that installation of solar-powered streetlights across the 44 local government areas would commence immediately.
According to him, the project was facilitated by Honourable Abba Bichi and is expected to improve public lighting, strengthen security and promote sustainable development across the state.
Usman disclosed that the government had resolved to appoint 50 special reporters for each local government area, alongside 35 advisers for each local government chairman.
He added that 15 of the adviser positions would be allocated to members of the former APC structure.
The commissioner said the appointments were intended to strengthen grassroots engagement, improve communication and enhance effective administration at the local government level.
On women empowerment, Usman said the new and improved monthly women empowerment programme would continue immediately.
He explained that the initiative was designed to promote economic empowerment, self-reliance and improved livelihoods among women across the state.
The commissioner said the resolutions reached at the meeting reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government and the 44 local government councils to strengthening security, infrastructure, human capital development, grassroots governance and the welfare of residents.
He urged ministries, departments and agencies, local government councils and other stakeholders to ensure the immediate and effective implementation of the resolutions.
