The Jigawa State Police Command has recorded major breakthroughs in its efforts to maintain law and order with the arrest of suspects linked to separate cases of culpable homicide, attacks on security personnel, arson, and violent disturbances at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the Command disclosed that on Monday, August 3, 2026, it received a report of a culpable homicide at Dabigel Village in Ringim Local Government Area.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a disagreement between two 20-year-old youths turned violent when one allegedly stabbed the other in the chest with a sharp metal object, locally known as Danbuda. The victim was rushed to hospital but was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.
Police operatives promptly arrested the suspect, identified as Saminu Ibrahim of Gidan Gona Village, Ringim LGA. The case is under investigation and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse before the suspect is arraigned in court.
In a separate development, the Command arrested two suspects in connection with the violent unrest that erupted at Gujungu Market on July 26, 2026.
According to the police, the disturbance began after a confrontation between a soldier and a 25-year-old trader, Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim of Miga Local Government Area. During the altercation, the soldier allegedly stabbed the victim, who later died from his injuries.
The incident reportedly triggered violence, during which hoodlums attacked a police station, fired bows and arrows at security personnel, and set two market stalls ablaze.
Following intelligence-led operations, police arrested two suspects, Muhammed Muhammed, 22, of Gagarawa LGA, and Faridu Mohammed, for their alleged involvement in the attack. Efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects.
The Command further disclosed that six additional suspects were arrested on August 2, 2026, for allegedly attacking two vigilante members with sticks and cutlasses during the same unrest. One of the vigilantes died from injuries sustained in the attack, while the second victim is receiving treatment at a medical facility.
The suspects are Isiyaku Abdulkarim, 55; Yahaya Habu, 31; Ibrahim Abubakar, 30; Audu Mamman Janare, 30; Ya’u Duga, 65; and Mamman Musa, 20, all from Taura, Gagarawa, Kaugama, and Jahun Local Government Areas.
Police also recovered six cattle believed to have been abandoned during the disturbances. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incidents and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the Command announced that a stakeholders’ meeting involving Miyetti Allah leaders, traditional and religious leaders, youth representatives, security agencies, and other relevant groups is underway to address the root causes of the Gujungu Market crisis, strengthen community cooperation, and prevent future occurrences.
The Commissioner of Police commended officers and other security agencies for their professionalism and swift response in containing the disturbances. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and warned that anyone involved in criminal activities would be prosecuted.
The Command also appealed to residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing investigations and enhance public safety.
