The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reassured Nigerians that all Nestlé infant formulae approved for sale in Nigeria are safe and unaffected by the recent voluntary recall announced by Nestlé UK.
The recall involves specific batches of SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula across more than 50 countries.
NAFDAC clarified that the recalled UK batches were withdrawn as a precaution due to the potential presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus that may cause nausea and vomiting.
Importantly, these batches were not registered by NAFDAC and are not authorised for distribution in Nigeria.
The agency confirmed that the SMA range sold in Nigeria is manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas Factory in Singapore and is duly registered with NAFDAC, including:
SMA GOLD 1 (NAFDAC Reg. No. B1-2783)
SMA GOLD 2 (NAFDAC Reg. No. B1-2780)
SMA GOLD 3 (NAFDAC Reg. No. B1-2781)
NAFDAC has verified that the SMA and NAN ranges available in Nigeria are not part of the recalled batches.
The notice underscores NAFDAC’s commitment to public health and vigilance against the importation, online purchase, or personal carriage of unregistered products.
The agency continues strict oversight through product registration, routine surveillance, and post-market monitoring of infant nutrition products.
Members of the public are advised to rely only on verified NAFDAC information, discard any recalled products if encountered, and report suspected sales to the nearest NAFDAC office or via the toll-free line: 0800-162-3322.
