The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), has directed its members to resume the previously suspended indefinite strike, citing the Federal Government’s failure to address key challenges facing resident doctors nationwide.
The Chairman of the ARD AKTH chapter, Dr. Aminu Bello Aminu, said the decision followed extensive deliberations and strict compliance with the directive of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD). He announced that the chapter would join the Total and Indefinite Consolidated Strike (TICS 2.0).
Governor Abba Yusuf Appeals to NMA to Suspend Strike
Speaking with journalists in Kano, Dr. Aminu stated that the strike is scheduled to commence by 12:00 midnight on Monday, January 12, 2026.
According to him, the decision was not taken lightly but came after prolonged engagements, repeated assurances, and persistent failure by relevant authorities to address critical welfare, training, and remuneration issues affecting resident doctors and the healthcare system.
Dr. Aminu listed the union’s demands to include the immediate reinstatement of the “FTH Lokoja Five” and the payment of all outstanding promotion and salary arrears.
Others include the implementation of the approved professional allowance table, with arrears captured in the 2026 Federal Budget, and official clarification by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to chief executives on skipping and entry-level placement issues.
He also called for the re-introduction and full implementation of the Specialist Allowance, resolution of house officers’ salary delays and arrears with the issuance of a clear pay advisory, and the re-categorization of membership certificates, including the issuance of certificates after Part I examinations by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).
Additional demands include the immediate commencement of locum practice, establishment of work-hours regulation committees, and the resumption and timely conclusion of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) process.
NMA Kano Withdraw Services Over Assault On Medical Doctor
Dr. Aminu warned that the continued neglect of these issues poses serious risks to healthcare delivery, workforce morale, and patient safety, stressing that resident doctors cannot function optimally in an environment marked by uncertainty and unfulfilled commitments.
He noted that while ARD AKTH remains open to genuine, concrete, and time-bound negotiations, the association stands in full solidarity with NARD and resident doctors nationwide until meaningful progress is achieved.
