No fewer than seven persons have been confirmed dead, while fourteen others sustained injuries in a road accident in Jigawa State.
The incident was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson of the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam.
According to the police, the accident occurred on Sunday evening along the Chaichai–Ringim Road following a head-on collision involving two vehicles.
SP Adam explained that the crash happened at Yakasawa village in Ringim Local Government Area and involved a Golf 3 wagon and a Toyota Sienna vehicle.
“Seven persons died instantly, while fourteen others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately rushed to the Ringim General Hospital for medical treatment,”
The police spokesperson added that the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
He cautioned motorists against reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, and overloading of passengers and goods, urging road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
The latest accident comes just days after about fifty people lost their lives in separate road crashes and a canoe capsize across different parts of Jigawa State.
Residents have blamed the frequent accidents on reckless driving and overloading, calling on relevant authorities to intensify the enforcement of traffic laws to curb the growing menace.
