No fewer than three explosive devices were reportedly discovered in Ganaru community, Zugurma district of Mashegu Local Government Area in Niger State.
Reports indicate that, farmers on their way to the farm noticed the devices planted by the roadside and immediately raised the alarm.
Confirming the incident to journalists, Mashegu Local Government Chairman, Jibrin Egade, said the area has been secured to prevent any potential explosion that could result in casualties.
He expressed shock over the discovery of such dangerous explosives in a community previously considered free of security challenges and stated that security agencies had already been notified for appropriate action.
When contacted, the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, confirmed the incident but clarified that only one explosive device, not three as claimed by the villagers, was found. He added that bomb experts had been deployed to the scene to assess and safely dispose of the device.
The Commissioner reassured residents, urging them to continue with their daily activities without fear of molestation or intimidation, stressing that the police were actively managing the situation.
This incident comes just two days after terrorists reportedly killed 42 people in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, highlighting ongoing security concerns in the region.
