No fewer than eleven persons have been confirmed dead, while twelve others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a road traffic accident in Jigawa State.
The incident occurred on Thursday at about 4:45 p.m. along the Ringim Sankara Beguwa Road and involved a red Volkswagen Golf vehicle with registration number ND 983 XA, which was reportedly conveying about 23 passengers.
Confirming the incident, the Ringim Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), CRC Ado Adamu, said preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by overloading and excessive speeding.
According to him, the speeding vehicle suffered a tyre burst, leading to loss of control and the eventual crash.
“The accident resulted in the death of eleven persons, while twelve others sustained injuries,” Adamu said.
He added that the victims were immediately rushed to the Ringim General Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed eleven fatalities, while the injured passengers are currently receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, the Jigawa State FRSC Sector Commander, CC Umar Masa’udu Matazu, has commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls.
He also urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, warning that speeding and overloading remain major causes of road crashes in the state.
