Medical students in Kano showcased innovative healthcare solutions at the second edition of the Dr. Aminu Magashi Annual Dabo Health Discourse, organized by the Kano State Medical Students Association (KAMSA).
The event, held at the Dentistry Theatre of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, featured a healthcare pitching competition aimed at promoting innovative approaches to addressing key health challenges in Nigeria.
The annual discourse, conceived by KAMSA in 2024, held its maiden edition in 2025 and has continued to provide a platform for medical students to propose practical solutions to pressing healthcare needs.
At the 2026 edition, five teams of medical students presented innovative projects, including DibDos CareLink, a digital blood mobilization system; DiWex, a post-discharge care solution designed to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality; EveryMum Antenatal Toolkit Initiative, focused on early recognition of pregnancy danger signs; E-Mama, a locally developed solution aimed at improving antenatal care attendance and reducing late emergency presentations; and HospSpace, a real-time hospital bed and emergency resource tracking system.
In his opening remarks, the KAMSA Welfare Officer and Chief Coordinator of the competition, Sunusi Bala, disclosed that 19 entries were received through an online application process, from which a panel of preliminary judges selected the top five projects based on set criteria.
Delivering the closing remarks, the Director of Operations of the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation, Mallam Jalo Sulaiman, commended the judges and KAMSA executives for the successful organization of the event.
He congratulated the participants and encouraged the winning teams to translate their ideas into practical solutions.
Mallam Sulaiman announced cash prizes of ₦100,000 for first place, ₦75,000 for second place, ₦50,000 for third place, and ₦25,000 each for the fourth and fifth runners-up, in addition to certificates of participation.
He also disclosed plans to organize a lunch meeting involving the winners, Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, and civil society organisations to explore opportunities for mentorship and implementation of the projects.
The event highlighted the growing role of medical students in driving innovation and contributing to improved healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
