The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council NERDC, has partnered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO to review the Teachers’ Training Manual aimed at supporting the effective implementation of the revised Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) across Nigeria.
Speaking at the workshop, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Salisu Shehu, commended the dedication, expertise and commitment of the resource persons assembled to undertake the review process.

He stressed that although the Basic Education Curriculum had already been revised, the success of its implementation would depend largely on the quality of teacher preparation and training.
“While the curriculum has been reviewed, its successful implementation depends greatly on adequate teacher preparation. Without proper teacher training, the objectives of the revised curriculum may not be fully achieved,” he said.
Prof. Shehu noted that the development of a new curriculum must be accompanied by efforts to strengthen teachers’ capacity and professional competence to ensure effective classroom delivery.
“Having developed the new curriculum, there is a need to also raise the standard and capacity of teachers who will implement it; otherwise, the entire exercise may amount to mere paperwork,” he added.
He further appreciated the resource persons for honouring the invitation despite the short notice, describing their contributions as critical to nation-building and the future of Nigerian children.
According to him, the revised Teachers’ Training Manual would play a significant role in supporting effective curriculum implementation nationwide.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Coordinator and Head of the Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) at NERDC, Dr. Chima Egbujuo, welcomed participants and applauded the collaboration between NERDC and UNESCO in improving teacher education in Nigeria.

He emphasised the central role teachers play in implementing the revised curriculum and underscored the need for a comprehensive Teachers’ Training Manual capable of equipping educators with modern pedagogical and professional skills.
The workshop focused on critically reviewing the draft Teachers’ Training Manual to ensure that its contents reflect competency-based, outcome-driven and learner-centred teaching approaches.
Participants also reviewed the teaching methods contained in the manual to ensure they are practical, replicable and suitable for classroom delivery across different learning environments.
Other objectives of the workshop included strengthening teachers’ competencies, enhancing participants’ understanding of the philosophy and principles guiding the revised Basic Education Curriculum, improving curriculum scoping and sequencing, and promoting inclusive classroom practices.
The exercise provided participants with the opportunity to analyse the contents of the draft manual, identify gaps, make recommendations and ensure alignment with the goals of the revised curriculum.
The five-day critique workshop, held from May 18 to May 22, 2026, at Golden Dabis Hotel, brought together education stakeholders from various institutions and agencies across the country to refine the Teachers’ Training Manual for effective nationwide teacher training and curriculum implementation.
