The Northern Reform Organisation, NRO, has backed the call by Catholic Bishops in Nigeria for urgent national reflection and action over the worsening economic and security challenges confronting the country.
In a statement dated August 8, 2026, and signed by its Chairman, Gidado Mukhtar, the organisation commended the Catholic Bishops for what it described as a courageous and patriotic assessment of the situation across various sectors of national life.
The NRO said the Bishops had demonstrated moral leadership and a strong sense of national responsibility by speaking publicly on issues affecting Nigerians rather than limiting their concerns to private engagements with government officials.
According to the organisation, the Bishops’ intervention transcends partisan and sectional interests and reflects concern for the welfare of Nigerians, national unity and the stability of the country.
The NRO said it fully associates itself with the concerns raised by the Catholic Bishops, particularly widespread economic hardship, insecurity, governance deficits and declining public confidence in state institutions.
It urged well-meaning Nigerians, civil society organisations, professional bodies and other stakeholders to support what it described as an important national call for reflection and corrective action.
The organisation also appealed to the Federal Government to critically consider the concerns raised by the Bishops and assess the depth of the challenges facing Nigerians beyond official narratives.
It stressed that genuine leadership requires acknowledging difficult realities and responding to them through sincerity, transparency, urgent action and decisive policies.
The NRO said Nigeria was at a critical point in its history, adding that the Catholic Bishops’ intervention should be viewed as a patriotic contribution to the national conversation rather than criticism for its own sake.
It expressed hope that the intervention would contribute to meaningful reforms capable of restoring public confidence, strengthening democratic governance, promoting equity and justice, and placing Nigeria on the path to recovery, national renewal and shared prosperity.
