The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) says the state has recorded flooding across three Local Government Areas LGAs.

The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Alhaji Isiyaku Abdullahi Kubarachi made the disclosure during a debriefing meeting with relevant stakeholders after a simulation exercise in at-risk communities.

Represented by director planning research and statistics Umar Abdulaziz, he highlighted that the affected local governments include Sumaila, Kibiya, and Tudunwada.

He pointed out that, following the simulation exercise, the agency and stakeholders visited two vulnerable communities – Larabar Gadon Sarki in Warawa and Gurjiya in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area.

The executive secretary maintained that, both communities are situated along the riverbank of Tiga Dam.

“The purpose of the visit was to assess the situation and discuss strategies for effectively managing information related to emergencies to minimize the impact of the flood.”

He noted that the communities were educated on how to prepare for and respond to any potential crisis from Tiga Dam.

Alhaji Isiyaku further revealed that the agency and stakeholders are looking into possibilities of creating an artificial Dam to contain the effect of Tiga Dam on the vulnerable communities.

“We have done our rapid response to access the situation after which we are waiting for government implementation to give them relief materials”

He therefore commended the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for their support in capacity and financing.

The Coordinator, national emergency management agency NEMA Kano territorial office, Dr Nura Abdullahi urged the public to desist from indiscriminate disposal of waste and people should avoid building on waterways.

He described solid waste management as a contributing factor to flooding across communities.

The meeting was organized by SEMA in collaboration with UNICEF, NEMA, and the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources.
