FactCheckAfrica has participated in a multi-stakeholder consultation organised by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Abuja, as part of preparations for Nigeria’s next United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).
The consultation, held on August 20, 2026, brought together stakeholders to contribute to discussions that will help shape the framework guiding UN system support to Nigeria over the next five years.
Representing FactCheckAfrica at the consultation was the organisation’s Researcher and Fact-Checker, Mustapha Lawal, who participated in the breakout session focused on Information Disorder and Information Inclusion.
The areas are closely linked to efforts to combat misinformation, strengthen fact-checking and verification, and promote a healthier and more inclusive information environment in Nigeria.
Lawal contributed to the group’s deliberations and presented the collective recommendations of Group 4, which focused on Information Disorder, during the plenary session.
Other participants in the group included Kunle Adebajo of Code for Africa; Sharon Omotosho, Director of the International Media and Information Literacy Institute; Abdulsalam Datti Yakubu of the National Human Rights Commission; and Dr. Tosin Adesola, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
FactCheckAfrica said its participation reflects its broader commitment to ensuring that information integrity is recognised as an important development issue and not solely as a media concern.
The organisation noted that the quality of information available to citizens has implications for decision-making, access to opportunities, participation in public life and the exercise of rights.
It expressed optimism that the insights generated during the consultation would contribute to shaping priorities under Nigeria’s next UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.
The consultation is part of a broader process aimed at identifying key development priorities and strengthening cooperation between the United Nations system and Nigeria over the coming five years.
