The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission ICPC has called on the University of Ibadan to deepen its commitment to ethical standards, transparency, and accountability in the administration of public institutions.
The charge was given by the Oyo State Office of the ICPC during the induction and inauguration of members of the university’s Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU).
Speaking at the event, Barr. Chile Ogwuegbu said the commission’s mandate extends beyond investigation and prosecution of corruption cases to include corruption prevention through system reviews, public enlightenment, and strengthening institutional integrity.
He explained that the establishment of ACTUs across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies serves as one of the commission’s preventive strategies against corruption.
According to him, the units are designed as internal integrity mechanisms to promote ethical compliance, monitor corruption risks, and support management in improving transparency and accountability within public institutions.
Barr. Ogwuegbu stressed that the fight against corruption requires collective responsibility and cannot be left solely to enforcement agencies.
“The fight against corruption cannot be left solely to enforcement agencies. Public institutions, public servants, and the private sector all have critical roles to play in ensuring integrity and accountability,” he said.
Also speaking, Mr. Oscar Ndukwe urged members of the ACTU to adhere strictly to international best practices and standards while carrying out their responsibilities.
He described the ACTU as an in-house mechanism established to curb corruption and promote ethical governance within institutions.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Kayode Oyebode, said the inauguration of the ACTU represents more than a routine exercise, describing it as a renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical stewardship.
He urged members of the unit to act decisively, impartially, and fearlessly in discharging their duties.
The Chairman of the ACTU, Prof. J.O. Ajiboye, pledged the unit’s commitment to diligently carrying out its mandate in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
The programme concluded with the administration of the oath of allegiance, during which members pledged to perform their duties with integrity and in line with the mandate of the commission.
