Maiduguri -The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has called for more support through resilience program for women and young population affected by the protracted Boko Haram violence in Nigeria and Lake Chad region.
UNFPA Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Dr Senne Hounton made the call in Maiduguri, Borno’s capital weekend during an Interaction with journalists after the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum.

Hounton, represented by the UNFPA Resident Representative in Burkina Faso, Alain Akpadji, noted that women and young people ought to get more empowerment in the newly launched Lake Chad Basin recovery and stabilization action plan because they have been negatively impacted by the 14 years violence.
“The UNFPA is interested; that women and young population are captured on issue of resilience and empowerment,” he told journalists.

He said the security situations had negative impact on humanitarian situation and the functioning of the health facilities in the region, making access to healthcare and service difficult, sometimes impossible for huge population of women and children.
While providing statistics on the impact of the violence on health sector, he said the data; 1,546 maternal mortality is very high.
“We are emphasizing the need to facilitate humanitarian access to affected populations, particularly pregnant women, girls and boys,” he said.
He said the UNFPA was at the 5th edition of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum not only to support the strategic plan by the governments of the member-states to tackle instability and humanitarian problem in the area but also to offer actionable solution to issues affecting women and young population.
