The Kano State Contributory Health Care Management Agency (KSCHMA), in collaboration with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), organized a three-day workshop focused on developing a performance management framework to improve healthcare services in Kano State.

The workshop aimed to establish a shared understanding of performance management, design a structured framework, and create an implementation plan aligned with the agency’s objectives.

Declaring the workshop open, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Mukhtar, explained that the initiative will strengthen their ability to provide quality and affordable healthcare to Kano State residents by ensuring efficiency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

She added that performance management is essential to achieving the agency’s goals, stating, “A well-structured system enables us to track progress, identify gaps, and implement corrective measures that will lead to better healthcare outcomes for all.”

Dr. Rahila also spoke about the role of teamwork and data-driven decision-making in healthcare services.

“Healthcare is dynamic, and to meet the needs of our people, we must constantly evaluate our performance and make necessary adjustments based on evidence”

The first day of the workshop featured presentations, group activities, and discussions.

Dr. Kabir Tukur delivered a presentation on the principles of performance management, emphasizing its key components and role in improving services.

A well-structured performance management framework is key to achieving KSCHMA’s vision of ensuring access to quality healthcare for all residents, Dr. Tukur stated. “Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) help us identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement, allowing us to track progress and enhance service delivery.”

He added that performance management supports efficiency, quality, accountability, sustainability, and patient satisfaction. “By using KPIs and continuous feedback mechanisms, KSCHMA can better implement policies and ensure equitable healthcare access,” he said.

A session reviewing sample performance management frameworks included Kaduna State’s model as a case study.

The facilitator explained its structure, KPIs, and measurement processes, highlighting the importance of setting quantifiable targets to monitor progress and improve services.

A participant from KSCHMA Sadiq Imam Abdullahi, expressed enthusiasm about the workshop. “This workshop has deepened our understanding of how structured, data-driven performance management can enhance our operations”
