The Government of Liberia has taken a significant step toward promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls by validating the draft National Gender Policy (2026–2036) and its Strategic Results Framework.
The validation meeting, convened by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, brought together representatives from government ministries and agencies, academia, civil society organisations, and development partners to review the policy’s strategic priorities, implementation framework, and accountability mechanisms.
The policy was developed in partnership with UN Women, with support from the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia and the European Union. It is expected to serve as Liberia’s roadmap for accelerating gender equality and women’s empowerment over the next decade.
Speaking during the meeting, UN Women stressed that the success of the policy would depend on more than strong commitments, emphasizing the need for effective implementation through strengthened accountability across government institutions, increased investment in gender-responsive planning and budgeting, and measurable improvements in the lives of women and girls, particularly those experiencing multiple forms of discrimination and exclusion.
According to stakeholders, the proposed National Gender Policy offers an opportunity to mainstream gender equality across government planning, budgeting, and service delivery, while reinforcing institutional mechanisms and partnerships to ensure that no woman or girl is left behind.
The policy will undergo a national validation meeting scheduled for 6–7 August, after which it will be submitted to the Liberian Cabinet for consideration and approval.
The initiative reflects Liberia’s commitment to advancing inclusive development and achieving equal opportunities for women and girls across all sectors of society.
