Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), has called for closer collaboration between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to tackle terrorism, transnational crime and other emerging security threats across West Africa.
General Musa made the call during a three-day working visit to Cotonou, Republic of Benin, where he said terrorism, violent extremism, cross-border crime and maritime insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea require coordinated regional action, enhanced intelligence sharing and sustained military cooperation among neighbouring countries.
He noted that the security challenges confronting the sub-region transcend national borders and can only be effectively addressed through collective efforts by West African countries.
During the visit, the Defence Minister met with Nigerian troops stationed at Togbin, conveying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to improving their welfare and strengthening their operational capabilities. He commended the troops for their dedication and sacrifice, describing their service as essential to Nigeria’s security and regional peace.
General Musa also visited Nigeria House in Cotonou, where he was received by Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Mrs. Mopelola Ibrahim.
He said Nigeria remains committed to deepening defence cooperation with neighbouring countries to promote lasting peace, stability and security across West Africa.
