Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and renowned lawyer Femi Falana SAN have secured the release of 71 teenagers from Kano State who were arrested during the EndBadGovernance protest in August 2024.
The teenagers were initially accused of treasonable felony after being found with Russian flags, but the Federal Government has now withdrawn the charges.
Governor Yusuf had vowed to pursue all legal avenues to ensure the teenagers’ freedom, and his efforts have finally paid off.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, expressed gratitude to human rights advocates, including Falana, for their tireless efforts in securing the minors’ release.
Barr. Suleiman Dantsoho, one of the human rights lawyers representing the teenagers, praised Governor Yusuf’s dedication to the cause, saying,
“This is a victory for justice and human dignity.” The governor’s leadership and advocacy were instrumental in ensuring the teenagers’ freedom .
The teenagers are set to be formally handed over to Governor Yusuf by Vice President Kashim Shettima before being flown back to Kano via Max Air.
This landmark decision highlights the importance of safeguarding the rights of individuals, especially minors, and demonstrates the power of legal advocacy in fighting injustice .
