The Kano State Government KNSG has vowed to completely crashing maternal mortality, rather than just reducing it.
This ambitious goal was announced by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, during a recent Partners Coordination Forum (PCF) meeting in Kano.
Kano Government Vows To Curb Maternal Mortality Through MAMII
Dr. Abubakar emphasized that the government is dedicated to transforming the healthcare sector, particularly in the area of maternal healthcare.
To achieve this goal, the government has renovated secondary healthcare facilities and awarded contracts for over 200 primary health center upgrades.
However, Dr. Abubakar expressed concern over statistics indicating that over 70% of women in Kano prefer home deliveries assisted by traditional birth attendants, rather than seeking medical care in hospitals.

He attributed this to a lack of confidence in healthcare services.
To address this issue, the government intends to have at least one fully functional primary health facility in each ward of Kano State.
Dr. Abubakar also called on development partners to align their efforts with the state government’s vision, emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency.
With the support of the federal government and development partners, achieving zero maternal mortality is considered “simple and realistic,” according to Dr. Yusuf.
