Kano State has emerged as a national leader in the digitisation of public health campaigns through the successful implementation of the Integrated Campaigns Digitisation (ICD) initiative.
Since 2022, the Kano State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KNSPHCMB), has partnered with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to strengthen the delivery of large-scale health campaigns across the state.
Through the initiative, Kano played a pioneering role in the development and contextualisation of DIGIT HCM, an integrated campaign management platform co-developed with the eGovernments Foundation.
The state’s real-world field experience significantly shaped the platform into a practical digital public good that can be adopted and adapted by other countries seeking to integrate and digitise health campaigns.
DIGIT HCM has been successfully deployed for both standalone Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) campaigns and integrated co-delivery campaigns, including the October 2025 integrated campaign.
So far, the platform has supported campaigns reaching about 2.8 million people, while improving coverage efficiency, strengthening stock accountability, enhancing performance monitoring and enabling data-driven decision-making.
The success of the initiative has positioned Kano State as a model for transforming fragmented campaign delivery systems into coordinated, efficient and data-driven operations through digitisation.
A major milestone recorded under the ICD initiative is the development of strong in-house technical capacity within the state’s existing Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and KNSPHCMB structures.
This has enabled Kano State to independently manage and implement digital campaign operations beyond partner-led support.
To ensure sustainability, the Ministry of Health has also strengthened collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to provide government-owned infrastructure and hosting.
DIGIT HCM has now been formally transitioned to the Ministry of Health under the Directorate of Planning, Research and Statistics, with day-to-day technical operations anchored within the EOC and KNSPHCMB.
The Kano State Ministry of Health expressed appreciation to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for supporting the state’s digital transformation journey, as well as to CHAI and the eGovernments Foundation for their technical partnership and commitment to building scalable and sustainable digital solutions that strengthen health systems in Nigeria and beyond.
