No fewer than 173 people lost their lives, while about 1,000 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in road traffic crashes across Jigawa State in 2025, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, Umar Masa’udu Matazu, revealed this in an interview with journalists, describing the figures as tragic and largely avoidable.
According to Matazu, the state recorded a total of 315 road traffic crashes within the year under review, noting that human error was responsible for more than 85 per cent of the incidents.
“Human factors accounted for about 85 per cent of the accidents, with over-speeding, overloading, and the use of expired or worn-out tyres identified as the major causes,” he said.
The sector commander further lamented that within a two-week period alone, over 40 people lost their lives, many others were injured, and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed due to a series of road accidents across the state.
Matazu appealed to the Jigawa State Government to strengthen road safety measures through increased investment in modern equipment, improved logistics, and better road infrastructure to reduce accidents and fatalities.
He also urged motorists and other road users to take personal responsibility for safety by obeying speed limits, avoiding reckless driving, and ensuring that their vehicles—especially tyres—are in good condition before embarking on journeys.
