President Bola Tinubu has called on West African leaders to take a cue from Ghana’s recent peaceful elections, citing them as a model of democratic maturity and commitment to national unity.
He made this statement at the opening of the 66th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS in Abuja, where he commended President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Ghanaian people for the success of their presidential and parliamentary elections.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of prioritizing national unity to ensure political stability in the region, allowing for peaceful transitions to become the norm in West African democracy.
He also highlighted Ghana’s democratic gains, particularly the concession of defeat by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and the ruling party, which demonstrated political maturity and respect for the people’s will.

Additionally, Tinubu praised President Akufo-Addo’s exceptional leadership and commitment to ECOWAS, as well as Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Ayokor Botchwey’s efforts in leading the ECOWAS Ministerial Committee on Reform.
He also congratulated Senegal on its successful parliamentary elections.
In his second term as ECOWAS Chair, Tinubu outlined the region’s achievements in regional integration, economic growth, conflict resolution, and counterterrorism efforts.

He stressed the importance of maintaining regional security, economic integration, peace, and prosperity as ECOWAS approaches its 50th anniversary in 2025.
