The remains of a 15-year-old boy, Sunusi Abubakar, have been recovered from a pond known locally as Mahayin gidan Toro in Gabari village, Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The deceased’s father, Abubakar Musa Gabari, said his son had gone to swim in the pond around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday but failed to return home.

Alarmed by his absence, family members and neighbours organised a search with the support of security agencies. The boy’s lifeless body was discovered the following morning.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesman of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, said:
“At about 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the NSCDC confirmed the death of 15-year-old Sunusi Abubakar from Gabari village, Chamo District, who was found inside the pond located about 1.5 kilometres north of the community.”
Mahmud added that the deceased’s shoes and trousers had earlier been found abandoned by the riverbank.

He further disclosed that no signs of injury were observed on the body, which was subsequently released to the family for burial in line with Islamic rites.
The NSCDC used the opportunity to caution parents, guardians, and community leaders against allowing children and youths to engage in unsafe swimming in open water bodies.
The Command assured that under the leadership of Commandant Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, it remains committed to protecting lives and property across Jigawa State.
