The Acting Provost of Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies (AKCILS), Kano, Dr. Ali Tamasi Mu’az, has appealed to the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to provide a solar mini-grid for the institution to improve electricity supply and support teaching, learning and administrative activities.
Dr. Tamasi made the request during a working visit to the Managing Director of the REA, Alhaji Abba Abubakar Aliyu, in Abuja.
He said the proposed solar mini-grid would complement the efforts of the Kano State Government in addressing the College’s growing energy needs and ensuring a more reliable power supply.
The Acting Provost commended the Agency for its previous interventions at the institution, particularly the installation of solar-powered streetlights, describing the projects as beneficial to the College community.
He explained that persistent power outages and the rising cost of fueling standby generators have increased operational expenses and disrupted academic activities.
According to him, the unstable electricity supply has also limited access to online learning resources and raised security concerns for students and staff.
Responding, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Alhaji Abba Abubakar Aliyu, commended the Acting Provost for taking the initiative to seek lasting solutions to the institution’s energy challenges.
He described the visit as a demonstration of commitment and proactive leadership, noting that the College’s management had shown determination to improve the learning environment despite existing constraints.
Aliyu assured the College of the Agency’s support and directed its management to submit a list of about 20 critical locations requiring electricity intervention for an energy audit and load analysis.
He said REA engineers would visit the institution after receiving the list to assess its energy requirements, adding that the College would be considered for support under the Agency’s Green Bond Project.
The Managing Director reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to expanding access to sustainable energy in educational institutions across the country, describing reliable electricity as essential to quality education and institutional development.
