The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) has intensified environmental monitoring across the state with the deployment of a dedicated Monitoring Team to inspect major and minor roads as well as other strategic locations.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of REMASAB, Abubakar Ahmad, which said the initiative is aimed at improving environmental cleanliness, waste management, drainage conditions and compliance with established sanitation standards.

According to the statement, the team is also mandated to monitor the activities of REMASAB personnel and ensure that assigned duties are performed efficiently and professionally, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
As part of its field operations, the Monitoring Team inspected Gadar Dangi, where it assessed the environmental condition of the area and reviewed sanitation activities.
The Board said the inspection revealed that a number of men, women and children had turned the area beneath and around the bridge into an informal place of residence.
REMASAB also reported that some sections of the bridge had been used for open defecation.

The Board said the situation raises concerns about public health, environmental hygiene, sanitation and safety, particularly because of the proximity to major public infrastructure.
It called for appropriate and coordinated intervention by relevant authorities to address the situation in a humane, orderly and sustainable manner.
The Board also stressed the need to protect public spaces and critical infrastructure from activities that could compromise environmental health and public safety.
The inspection forms part of efforts by the Managing Director of REMASAB, Dr Muhammad S. Khalil, to strengthen institutional monitoring, improve waste management operations and enhance environmental sanitation standards across Kano State.
REMASAB said it would continue regular monitoring and supervision to ensure accountability among sanitation personnel, uphold operational standards and identify emerging environmental challenges for prompt action.

The Board urged residents, communities and other stakeholders to support sanitation efforts by maintaining clean surroundings, using designated waste disposal points and avoiding practices that contribute to environmental degradation.
REMASAB reiterated its commitment to working with communities and relevant authorities to safeguard the environment and promote a cleaner, safer and healthier Kano State.
