The Nigerian Democracy Working Group has expressed concern over the reported involvement of the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, in an alleged anti-APC rally in Kano, where posters and banners bearing the images of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf were reportedly pulled down and destroyed.
The group described the development as unfortunate and called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and uphold peace, law and order in the state.

In a statement signed by its Assistant National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Abubakar Sa’ad, the group acknowledged the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
However, it stressed that such rights must be exercised within the confines of the law and should not involve the destruction of property, intimidation or any action capable of creating fear among law-abiding citizens.
The group also noted that issues surrounding the Kano Emirate are currently before a competent court, urging all parties involved to respect the judicial process and allow the court to determine the matter.

It expressed concern that the Emir’s alleged appearance at a political rally while the matter remains before the court could heighten political tension and generate unnecessary controversy in the state.
The Nigerian Democracy Working Group therefore urged political actors, traditional institutions and their supporters to refrain from actions capable of undermining peace, unity and stability in Kano State.
It also called on security agencies to ensure the protection of lives and property, including political campaign materials belonging to all parties, while maintaining neutrality and enforcing the law without fear or favour.

The group further appealed to traditional rulers to remain above partisan politics and continue to serve as symbols of unity, peace and reconciliation, irrespective of the political affiliations of their subjects.
It reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful democratic participation, respect for the rule of law and the protection of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
