Thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, are set to participate in the National School Swimming Championship, tagged “FISH,” scheduled to hold in Lagos.
The championship, organized by the Nigerian School Sports Federation (NSSF), aims to revive the lost glory of school sports nationwide.
The event will take place at the National Stadium swimming pool, Surulere, Lagos, from February 13 to 14, 2025.

According to the Secretary-General of the NSSF, Oba Funsho Usman, the championship will feature young athletes from public and private schools competing in various swimming events.
The winners will represent Nigeria at the International School Federation (ISF) Gymnasiade and other international school sports competitions later in the year.
The events will include under-18 and under-15 boys and girls categories for freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly 50 meters, 200 meters, and 200 meters, respectively.
In addition to the swimming championship, the NSSF has also lined up a board chess competition among secondary schools in under-9, under-12, under-15, and under-18 categories.
The chess competition will take place at the Universal Basic Education Board Hall, Maryland, Lagos, from February 10 to 11.
Four secondary schools from Kano State – Government Secondary Schools Minjibir, Bagwai, Bukavu Barracks, and GSS Stadium – will represent the state in the championship.
The Kano State Ministry of Education has ensured that the athletes receive rigorous training to make an impact in the championships.
The Head of School Sports in the ministry, Ibrahim Bello, commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the state Commissioner of Education, Dr. Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda, for their financial and moral support. He urged the athletes to excel and make the state proud.
