The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has nominated Dr Muhammad Hamisu as its candidate for the Gwale Federal Constituency seat in Kano State ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

Dr Hamisu emerged as the party’s flagbearer through consensus following the completion of the party’s nomination process, paving the way for him to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives.

NDC Unveils Political Heavyweight Gwarzo for Kano Governorship Race

A respected cybersecurity expert, grassroots political organiser and prominent member of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr Hamisu currently serves as the Global Coordinator of Kwankwasiyya Diaspora, overseeing the movement’s activities and mobilisation efforts across different countries.

His emergence has been welcomed by party supporters and political associates, who describe him as a candidate with a unique blend of youth leadership experience, international exposure, professional expertise and deep-rooted connections to the grassroots.

Dr Hamisu’s political journey began during his university days, where he actively participated in student and community mobilisation activities. Over the years, he has built a reputation as one of the leading youth mobilisers within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, playing a key role in expanding its support base, particularly among young people in Nigeria and across the Diaspora.

Political observers note that his success in organising and mobilising youths for the movement has helped strengthen Kwankwasiyya’s presence both at home and abroad, making him a familiar figure among the movement’s supporters.

Speaking after securing the ticket, Dr Hamisu pledged to provide effective and responsive representation for the people of Gwale Federal Constituency.

He promised to champion legislation and policies aimed at improving education, creating opportunities for young people, promoting economic growth, strengthening digital innovation and enhancing the overall welfare of his constituents.

“I am committed to serving the people of Gwale with dedication, integrity and accountability. Our constituency deserves representation that listens, engages and delivers tangible results,” he said.

Analysts believe Dr Hamisu’s combination of grassroots political mobilisation experience, expertise in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, and professional experience gained in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom could bring fresh perspectives to legislative debates and policymaking at the National Assembly.

They also expressed optimism that his longstanding involvement in community advocacy and youth engagement would enhance his ability to effectively articulate the concerns and aspirations of the people of Gwale.

A native of Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, Dr Hamisu attended BUK Staff School for his primary education before proceeding to Dawakin Kudu Science College for his secondary education. He later studied Computer Engineering at Bayero University Kano (BUK).

Following graduation, he worked with Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) before moving to the United Kingdom on scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics. He subsequently earned a PhD in Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence.

While in the United Kingdom, he played a leading role in establishing and strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement’s presence in the Diaspora. Starting from the UK chapter, he helped coordinate and expand the movement’s activities internationally, eventually becoming the Global Coordinator of Kwankwasiyya Diaspora.

After completing his studies, Dr Hamisu returned to Nigeria and became more actively involved in politics and community mobilisation.

In the 2023 general elections, he aspired to represent Gwale Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives but stepped aside in support of the party’s eventual candidate.

Reflecting on that decision, he said: “I stepped down in the interest of the movement and party unity after our leader, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, appealed to me to be patient and continue serving the cause.”

Supporters say his loyalty to the movement, dedication to youth empowerment and track record of grassroots engagement have strengthened his standing among party faithful and constituents alike.

At 38, Dr Hamisu is married with children and is widely regarded as part of a new generation of political leaders seeking to combine professional excellence, grassroots mobilisation and public service to drive development and good governance.
