The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) says its Bioresources Development Centre (BIODEC) in Katsina is leveraging biotechnology to promote food security, renewable energy and sustainable livelihoods through innovative research and technology development.
The Centre is converting agricultural residues and animal waste into biogas, which is purified and compressed into clean cooking gas as part of efforts to provide affordable and environmentally friendly energy solutions.
Researchers have also developed biocharcoal briquettes from agricultural biomass to provide households with a cleaner alternative to conventional charcoal while reducing environmental pollution and creating income opportunities through waste-to-wealth initiatives.
In the agricultural sector, the Centre has developed VI GRO Organic Biofertilizer to improve soil fertility and boost crop yields using locally sourced biological materials.
It has also produced BIODECIDE, a plant-based biopesticide formulated from natural bioactive compounds to help farmers control pests safely while reducing dependence on synthetic pesticides.
Beyond research, the Centre is promoting food security and economic empowerment through fish farming, rabbit breeding, apiculture, soya milk production and mineral block development for livestock.
The Centre also conducts regular training and technology transfer programmes for farmers, women, youth entrepreneurs, students, SIWES participants and researchers to equip them with biotechnology skills for enterprise development and improved livelihoods.
Director-General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, said the achievements demonstrate the Agency’s commitment to using biotechnology to address national development challenges.
He added that NBRDA is strengthening its Bioresources Development Centres across the country to accelerate innovation, technology development and community impact.
The Coordinator of BIODEC Katsina, Dr. Mohammad Ahmad, said the Centre remains committed to developing practical technologies that improve agricultural productivity, support clean energy development and expand economic opportunities for Nigerians.
