The wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hajiya Fatima Abbas Tajudeen, has called for stronger measures to promote inclusive democracy, urging sustained reforms to enhance the participation of women and other marginalized groups in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Speaking during the ongoing 2026 National Assembly Open Week, Fatima Abbas said democracy thrives when citizens are actively engaged, institutions remain transparent and accountable, and all segments of society have the opportunity to contribute to national development.
She commended the 10th House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, for promoting legislative openness, institutional reforms, and greater citizen engagement.
Fatima Abbas also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and lauded the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her advocacy on behalf of women, vulnerable groups, and social inclusion.
The Speaker’s wife reiterated her support for the proposed Special Seats Bill, describing it as a critical constitutional reform aimed at addressing the persistent underrepresentation of women and other marginalized groups in elective offices.
She also endorsed the proposed Electoral College Model, noting that it could broaden political participation, reduce the cost of elections, and strengthen representative democracy.
Fatima Abbas further commended Nigerian women, civil society organizations, development partners, the House of Representatives Spouses Association (HORSA), and other advocates for their continued efforts toward achieving a more inclusive and representative democracy in the country.
