The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has intensified efforts to strengthen meteorological research and enhance service delivery across critical sectors through strategic international collaboration, particularly in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and aviation research.
This followed a high-level meeting between Professor Anosike and the Director-General of the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), KOH LI-NA, where both parties explored areas of mutual interest and cooperation.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of Ecosperity Week 2026 held in Singapore.
During the discussions, both leaders acknowledged the similarities between Nigeria and Singapore in tropical weather patterns and the administration of meteorological science, especially their significant impact on the aviation industry.
The engagement focused on opportunities for collaboration between MSS and NiMet in accelerating the evaluation and integration of Artificial Intelligence models into meteorological operations.
The initiative is expected to improve the accuracy, speed, and downscaling capabilities of weather forecasts, thereby providing enhanced socioeconomic support to sectors including aviation, agriculture, marine services, health, and disaster risk reduction.
NiMet and MSS are both ISO-certified for services rendered to the aviation industry. Building on the successful joint aviation research collaboration between MSS and Singapore’s civil aviation authorities, the meeting also explored the possibility of replicating similar provider-user co-developed solutions in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Other areas discussed during the meeting included cost-recovery models and related legal frameworks, the use of AI to improve manpower productivity, and the role of Quality Management Systems (QMS) in promoting operational efficiency and a healthy work environment.
Nigeria and Singapore are both members of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). While Nigeria hosts the WMO Office for North, Central, and West Africa, Singapore hosts the WMO Regional Office for Asia and the South-West Pacific.
Both Permanent Representatives emphasized the importance of global partnerships, cross-border cooperation, and mutual learning in advancing meteorology, improving forecasting accuracy, strengthening capacity building, and enhancing the delivery of life-saving early warning systems worldwide.
