The Management of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has announced an immediate ban on the charging of privately owned electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles using the University’s electricity supply across all its campuses.
The decision, contained in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, followed the University’s concern over the indiscriminate charging of private electric motorcycles, which has significantly increased electricity consumption and placed a heavy financial burden on the institution.
According to the statement, the continued use of University electricity for charging private electric vehicles is no longer sustainable as the institution remains committed to the prudent management of its resources.
The University directed all staff, students, commercial motorcycle operators, and other users of electric motorcycles to immediately stop charging their vehicles using the University’s electricity supply.
Management warned that anyone found violating the directive would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the University’s rules and regulations.
To ensure compliance, the University has instructed Provosts, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, and Heads of Units to monitor adherence within their respective areas and promptly report any violations to the appropriate authorities.
The statement added that a University Monitoring Team would conduct regular patrols across all campuses to enforce the directive.
The management appealed to all affected persons to cooperate with the new policy, stressing that the measure is aimed at reducing energy costs and ensuring the judicious use of the University’s resources.
