The Kano State Government has pledged stronger action against perpetrators of violence and abuse against women, children and persons with special needs in the state.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, Ambassador Amina Abdullahi Sani, made the pledge during a sympathy visit to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano.
The Commissioner was at the hospital to visit Salamatu Abubakar, a resident of Tsanyawa Local Government Area who is receiving treatment following an alleged domestic violence incident.
Reports indicate that Salamatu was allegedly attacked with hot water by her co-wife, identified as Salima Sani, following a disagreement between them.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including allegations concerning the conduct of the victim’s husband, are subject to appropriate investigation.
Speaking to journalists at the hospital, Ambassador Amina Abdullahi Sani condemned violence against women and other vulnerable persons, warning that the state government would take legal action against anyone found culpable.
She said the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf would not tolerate acts capable of undermining the safety, dignity and rights of women, children and persons with special needs.
The Commissioner disclosed that Governor Yusuf was aware of the incident and had directed the Ministry to ensure that the victim receives the necessary care and support, while efforts are made to ensure that justice is served.
As part of the immediate intervention, the Commissioner donated food items, beverages and other essential materials to the victim.
She also presented Salamatu with a cash donation of one hundred thousand naira and directed that the Ministry take responsibility for her medical expenses until she recovers.
The Commissioner urged members of the public to promptly report cases of domestic violence, abuse and other forms of violation against vulnerable persons to relevant authorities.
She said the Ministry would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to protect the rights, dignity and welfare of vulnerable persons across Kano State.
