    SBRS ABU Organises Career Talk for Secondary Schools in Zaria

    The School of Basic and Remedial Studies (SBRS), Ahmadu Bello University ABU, has organised a career talk for secondary schools in Zaria metropolis.

    The event took place on Wednesday, 25th June, 2025 at Alhudahuda College, Zaria.

    In his remarks, the Director, School of Basic and Remedial Studies (SBRS), Dr Sanusi Gambo, explained that the school deemed it necessary to organise the career talk because of the growth in misunderstanding the choice among secondary school students.

    Dr. Gambo pointed out that it became necessary to give back by addressing the challenge of choosing career paths by bringing experienced paper presenters to enlighten the students.

    The Director noted that SBRS had over the years provided guidance for students on Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

    In his paper titled “Emerging Trends and Opportunities for Science-Oriented Students in the 21st Century”, Dr. Abubakar Abubakar Khaleed of the Department of Physics, Ahmadu Bello University, listed some transformations that had brought about new career opportunities.

    Dr. Khaleed identified artificial intelligence, digital transformation, gloglobalisationlimate change, cyber security, aerospace communication and public health as some of science science-related career opportunities of the 21st Century.

    Such transformations, according to him, had created new disciplines like robot and robotics, biotechnology and genetic engineering, solar and hydro-energy, robotics and automation, space science and satellite technology, cybersecurity, digital economy and a host of others.

    He encouraged students to master technical skills, foster creativity and remain committed to lifelong learning regardless of their background in tocel in their chosen fields of study.

    Dr. Khaleed called on the students to join clubs that would mould their talents and always seek guidance from their teachers, as the 21st century offered limitless opportunities for science-based students.

    In another presentation titled “School of Basic and Remedial Studies Funtua and its Role in Facilitating Admission into Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria”, a former Director of SBRS, Prof Balarabe Abdullahi, stated that students who had passed through SBRS were considered for admission first before others.

    Prof. Balarabe encouraged students to apply for admission into SBRS as it opens opportunities in careers to pursue while giving them an upper hand in gaining admission into ABU.

    Prof Balarabe also emphasised that ABU was one of the few universities that offered the new generation courses that were in tandem with international trends.

    Also speaking, another former Director of SBRS, Prof Sadiq Mohammed, noted that SBRS had many laboratories and many teachers.

    Prof Sadiq advised the students to be resolute and take their academic choices very seriously.

    In a goodwill message, the Chairman, Board of Governors, SBRS, Funtua, Prof. Hassan Adamu Zoaka, reiterated that Artificial Intelligence would take over many jobs in the next 20 to 30 years.

    Prof. Zoaka called on the students to make a choice of courses that would be relevant shortly.

    In his goodwill message, the Madakin Zazzau, Alhaji Munnir Jafaru, said choosing a career was about aligning one’s interest with where the norms and values of society fall.

    Represented by the Majidadin Madakin Zazzau, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Sadiq, and Alhaji Munnir encouraged the students to take ownership of their future and create opportunities without waiting for it.

    Delivering a vote of thanks, Fagacin Zazzau, Alhaji Umar Muhammad, congratulated SBRS for successfully organising the career talk.

    Alhaji Umar, who is also the Chairman of, Education Committee, Zazzau Emirate Council, disclosed that all issues raised could not be achieved without a concrete foundation.

    The Fagacin Zazzau noted that for students to be groomed in science subjects, they needed to be given assignments frequently and engage in class exercises.

    The event was attended by representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps, (NSCDC) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Teachers and Students among others.
