Kano State Governor’s College has emerged as the winner of the 10th Edition of the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy NILDS, earning the right to represent the state at the North West regional level of the competition.
The contest, organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) under the supervision of the National Assembly, was designed to deepen young people’s understanding of the legislature’s role in promoting democracy.

The competition featured six secondary schools, two from each of the state’s three senatorial districts.
The schools were Governor’s College, Government Girls Secondary School Kadawa, Science College Dawakin Tofa, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo, Girls Science and Technical College Sumaila, and Government Secondary School Rano.
The quiz covered thematic areas such as legislative oversight and accountability, parliamentary practice and procedures, the structure and performance of the National Assembly, constitutional issues, and governance.
Declaring the event open, Chairman, House Committee on Education, Alhaji Suleiman Mukhtar Ishaq Madobi, represented by the Assistant Chief Legislative Officer, Umar Abdulganiyu, reaffirmed the state legislature’s commitment to supporting civic education initiatives that enlighten young Nigerians about legislative processes.

“As tradition, any winning school will be invited to the House for recognition and encouragement before proceeding to the national stage,” he said, while also encouraging other schools to arrange excursions to the Assembly for first-hand exposure to legislative activities.
In his goodwill message, State Commissioner of Education, DrAli Haruna Makoda, represented by the Director of Educational Support Services, Hajiya Halima Sadiya Tukur, commended the National Assembly and NILDS for prioritising youth engagement in civic education.
“This event is not just a quiz competition but a celebration of knowledge that inspires young minds and lays a strong foundation for more informed, participatory citizenship,”
At the end of the contest, Governor’s College clinched first place, followed by Government Girls Secondary School, Gwarzo, in second, and Government Secondary School, Rano, in third.
Presenting prizes and certificates, the Director General of NILDS, Professor Abubakar O. Suleiman, represented by Programme State Coordinator Aliyu Abdullahi, praised the students’ performance and recalled the competition’s growth since its launch in 2016.
“The competition has become an annual event, now in its 10th edition and fourth at the national level, following directives by the Institute’s Governing Council, chaired by the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, to expand participation nationwide,” he said.
Certificates of participation were awarded to all schools, while prizes were presented to the top three winners.
