The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an unacceptable and unconstitutional takeover that threatens democratic stability in the West African sub-region.
In a statement signe by the spokesperson Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja
Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria expressed “profound dismay and deep concern” over the military insurrection that has disrupted constitutional governance in the country.
The government said the development represents a clear violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which prohibits any form of unconstitutional change of government.
Nigeria affirmed its solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and called for the immediate and unconditional restoration of democratic order. It also demanded the protection and release of all individuals detained during the crisis and urged full respect for the country’s democratic institutions.
The Federal Government specifically appealed to the coup leaders to guarantee the safety of all election observers currently in Guinea-Bissau on official duty.
Nigeria further urged all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint, embrace peaceful dialogue, and respect the choice of the electorate as expressed through the ballot box and the recently concluded election process.
The government warned that those responsible for the coup would be held accountable for actions that could destabilize the nation and reverse its democratic progress.
As an active member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria pledged to work with regional and international partners to ensure a swift return to normalcy and constitutional governance in Guinea-Bissau. It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democracy, peace, and stability across Africa.
