The Jigawa State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency (JSPHCDA), SWAp Coordination Office, and development partners, has held a comprehensive review of maternal and newborn health services under the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) Taskforce Committee.
The meeting, which brought together high-ranking government officials and development partners, was chaired by Dr. Atiku Hafiz Ringim, SWAp Coordinator and Special Adviser on Public Health to the Executive Governor.
Hajiya Maryam Abu, the state MAMII Focal Person, outlined the committee’s objectives and highlighted key areas for improving maternal and newborn health outcomes across the state.
Officials in attendance included Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim, Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health; Dr. Shehu Sambo, Executive Secretary of JSPHCDA; as well as directors of Planning, Hospital Services, Pharmaceutical Services, Medical Services, Public Health and Disease Control, and Administration and Finance. Senior advisers and coordinators from various health programs also participated.
Representatives from development partners, including UNICEF Nigeria, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Society for Family Health, Nutrition International, JSI, CARE, TB and Leprosy Mission, and NEPWHAN, provided updates on ongoing initiatives, shared goodwill messages, and contributed technical insights to the discussions.
During the meeting, presentations by Dr. Zubairu Usman (Deputy Director, Hospital Services) and Hajiya Nafisatu Sulaiman Lawan (RESMAT Programme Manager) highlighted recent progress, maternal and perinatal health indicators, and programmatic interventions implemented across the state.
The discussions enabled stakeholders to identify service delivery gaps, review implementation challenges, and agree on actionable steps to enhance maternal and newborn health outcomes.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants renewed their commitment to strengthening maternal and newborn health services, fostering collaboration with development partners, and ensuring sustainable improvements for Jigawa State’s healthcare system.
This latest initiative highlights Jigawa State’s ongoing efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and improve healthcare delivery for women and children.
